Thank you for choosing Miami Valley Cardiologists for your testing needs. The testing that your physician has ordered is expected to take 3 to 4 hours. Your test includes administration of a medication to simulate exercise, requiring an IV to be placed (please avoid long-sleeved shirts). For those who are able, you will walk slowly on a treadmill for 6-minutes while the medication is given. For all others, the medication will be administered while you sit in a recliner, also lasting 6-minutes in duration.
- Please bring your insurance cards and insurance referral if necessary and a list of the medications you are currently taking.
To ensure that your testing is completed with the highest level of accuracy and efficiency, it is important that these pre-test instructions are closely followed:
- Avoid food 4 hours prior to your scheduled test. Drink 2 glasses of water before coming to the office for your test. Take your medications as usual with water, unless they fall within the following categories.
Avoid the Following substances 24 hours prior to your test, as it will result in the rescheduling of your test due to drug interactions.
- Avoid food or beverage containing caffeine, including decaffeinated beverages such as soda, decaffeinated soda, tea(Iced or Hot), decaffeinated tea, coffee, decaffeinated coffee, or cocoa/chocolate of any kind.
- Avoid any medications containing caffeine such as Anacin, Excedrin, Darvon, Cafregot, Fiornal, No Doz, Syna/Gosdc, Vanquish, or Wigraine
Avoid medications containing theophylline 48 hours prior to your test:
- Avoid any medications containing Theophylline such as Aerolat, Aggrenox, Bronkody, Constant-T, Persantine, Quibron-T, Respbid, Elixophylline, Slo-Bid, Sustaire, Slo-Phyllin, Theo-24, Theo-Dur, Theochron, Theoclear LA, Theolair, Theobid, Theophylline, Theospan, Uniphyl, Theovent, or Any Inhaler containing theophylline. Please bring all your inhalers with you at time of procedure.
- After your morning shower, please refrain from applying lotions or powders as it makes the EKG and IV tape less effective. Avoid wearing shirts or blouses with metal buttons.
- It is important that you bring a meal along with you to eat after the stress test. A high fat meal is recommended, such as bologna sandwich or peanut butter sandwich with potato chips. In addition, we prefer that you bring along a carbonated beverage. The high fat meal and carbonated beverage following the stress test will assist us in obtaining optimal images. You may, if you prefer, leave the office to eat at a local "fast food" restaurant, then return for another set of images. If you are an insulin dependent diabetic, please bring your medication and supplies with you.
Please give 24 hours notice (937) 223-4461, if you must reschedule or cancel your testing. This is important, as we order the medications the day before testing.
