• Pacemaker and Defibrillator

Pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICD's) are small electronic devices that improve survival and quality of life in patients with heart rhythm disturbances.

Pacemaker

Pacemakers use low energy electrical impulses to maintain an adequate heart rate in individuals with intrinsically slow heart rates or cardiac conduction disease. Some pacemakers also coordinate electrical signaling within the heart muscle to enhance the heart's pumping function.

ICD

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators use rapid pacing and/or high energy shocks to treat malignant ventricular arrhythmias in patients who have experienced or who are at high risk for sudden cardiac death. ICD's also provide pacing support for slow heart rhythms in a manner similar to pacemakers.

Cardiologists with electrophysiology training implant these devices and place the transvenous wires that connect these devices to the heart.

Follow Up

All implantable electronic devices require regular monitoring and programming to enhance safety and optimize the device function. Some of this follow-up requires regular office visits. Today's technology, however, allows performance of some device surveillance over the phone adding convenience and further enhancing safety. At Miami Valley Cardiologists we incorporate state of the art device monitoring to provide the best possible outcomes for all individuals requiring device support.
