  • What to Expect - Resting Gated Study (MUGA)

Thank you for choosing Miami Valley Cardiologists for your testing needs. The testing that your physician has ordered is expected to take about 1 hour. Your test includes the placement of an IV in your hand or arm (please avoid long-sleeved shirts).

You will meet a Nuclear Medicine Technologist who will ask you for information about your health history and then explain the test completely before beginning the procedure. The technologist will place an I.V. in your hand or arm and draw a small sample of your blood. You will then be sent to a waiting area to relax for about 30 minutes. During that time, the technologist will prepare your blood sample with a radioactive material. After that process, you will be re-injected with your own blood, which now contains a radioactive material so that we can see the blood inside your heart with our camera. This small amount of radioactivity will not cause you to feel any different, and we will only perform one test at a time to insure that no patient can possibly receive another patient's blood. You will have three EKG patches placed on your chest and abdomen, which the technologist will use as part of the imaging procedure. Then we will acquire your images, which will take about 25 minutes to scan. At the completion of these images, your test is finished and you are free to go.

  • Please bring your insurance cards and insurance referral if necessary and a list of the medications you are currently taking.

To ensure that your testing is completed with the highest level of accuracy and efficiency, it is important that the pre-test instructions are closely followed:

  • You eat and drink as usual and you may take your medications as usual.
  • After your morning shower please refrain from applying lotions or powders as it makes EKG and IV tape less effective.
  • Please give 24 hours notice (223-4461) if you must reschedule or cancel your testing. This is important, as we order the medications the day before testing.
